Schools Gain Experience of Valued Business Mentors

Dec 19, 2016

Schools throughout the Heart of the South West LEP area (Devon, Somerset, Plymouth & Torbay) have piloted a new project which aims to create better links between schools and businesses.

A number of schools across the South West have been paired with a volunteer business mentor as part of the Enterprise Adviser Network.

Following a summer long recruitment campaign, more than 30 employers were partnered with schools and in September this year, began to assist the Senior Leadership Teams to identify fresh new ideas and create a strategic bespoke learning plan. This procedure, it is hoped, will improve and support the development of careers advice and guidance available to young people.

Steve Hindley, Chair of the Heart of the South West LEP, said: "This project will not only help young people and schools, but will also help the economy of the area, helping to address skills shortages and make steps to fill the gap.

The schools involved have been selected according to a number of criteria, including exam results, the number of pupils receiving free school meals and the number of leavers not in education, employment or training (NEETs).
